How to select a logistics school
With a high demand for education that is focused on logistics, a few schools are developing programs specifically for rank-and-file warehouse employees. Businesses want them to know how their jobs impact customers and how their work in one department can impact activities at other locations, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
The degrees available vary but the majority of them comprise fundamental courses that teach basic concepts, such as operations and supply chain management, procurement, transportation and distribution networks as well as warehousing and inventory management, as well as business fundamentals. Some universities offer specializations in e-commerce logistics for retail and logistics analysis, transportation and global logistics management.
Graduates are able to take on roles such as supply chain managers and logisticians. They could also work in roles such as purchasing agents industrial production managers, purchasing agents and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to enhance their career prospects.
Consider whether the university is accredited. This can be done by a group such as the U.S. Department of Education, or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These organizations recognize 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Additionally, look for a college that has an adequate student-to-teacher ratio, which will ensure that you get the best education.
Some colleges offer online or hybrid programs that combine classroom instruction with virtual learning opportunities. This type of program may appeal to those who want flexibility in their schedules or who are unable to take classes in a traditional manner. Some online-only courses offer associate’s or certificates, while other programs offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
